What is Gyrotonic©?

GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM©

The Gyrotonic Expansion System© is a unique exercise program: intelligent, pleasurable and powerful. From the word ‘gyro’ (spiral, circle) and ‘tonic’ (tone or invigorate), it consists of a brilliantly conceived series of movements performed on beautiful, carved wood apparatus designed in harmony with the human body. Gyrotonic exercises are fluid, dynamic, and very efficient.
Most conventional exercise machines promote isolated, linear movement patterns, resulting in uncoordinated strength in the body’s outer ‘sleeve’ of muscles. By contrast, Gyrotonic exercises create coordinated strength and flexibility from the body’s powerful core by using three-dimensional, natural movements and multiple joint articulations. The circular movements flow smoothly between extension and contraction, action and recovery, strengthening ligaments and bringing balanced support to the entire skeletal structure. Natural breathing patterns accompany the exercises, creating rhythm, cardiovascular stimulation, and increased vitality.

How was it developed?

Juliu Horvath, a former competitive gymnast and swimmer and professional ballet artist, created the Gyrotonic Expansion System. Turning to the study of yoga to heal himself of injuries, Juliu discovered the deeper principles of human movement, resulting in a program that combines key attributes of yoga, dance, swimming, weight training, and gymnastics.

Who can do it?

Gyrotonic exercise can be beneficial for anyone, regardless of age or physical condition. Dancers, athletes, seniors, and just plain everyday people enjoy it. Sessions are specifically tailored to individual needs. Through an understanding of anatomy and kinesiology, instructors foster gradual, sustained changes in body awareness and alignment, strength, mobility, and endurance. Gyrotonic training is appropriate for conditioning, rehabilitation from injury, and as an intelligent fitness for everyday life.
