Newsflash

Born in Germany, Jospeh Pilates suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever as a child. Determined to overcome these weaknesses, he studied a variety of techniques, including yoga, bodybuilding and gymnastics, becoming one of the first to combine Western physical studies with Eastern mind-body techniques. In 1926 he immigrated to the U.S.A. and with his wife Clara founded his first Pilates studio in New York City.

In the early part of the twentieth century, Ida Rolf attended Columbia University for her Doctorate in Biochemistry. After additional study of yoga, chiropractic, and osteopathic manipulation, she formed her structural integration series known as Rolfing.

What is Rolfing?

The only way to know what Rolfing is like is to try a session. The experience of Rolfing varies with the individual; each person has a different response to the work. Reactions encompass a continuum from intense, physical release of tension to profound catharsis from the release of deeply held feelings, and everything in between. Invariably the rolfee (person receiving the therapy) has an area of extreme tension and holding somewhere in their body, at Accurate Rehab combining acupuncture into the treatment mix allows more comfort to the rolfee.

The importance of Rolfing lies not in what happens during the session, but in what happens in between sessions, as the body unwinds from a feeling of being grounded in one session to a feeling of being lifted to the sky in the next.

Looking at the whole framework of the Rolfing series, Rolfing is time/cost-effective relative to other manual therapies. While Rolfing can be used as a “symptom fix” outside of the series, the ten session series potentiates a manifold effect that exponentially increases the effectiveness of the work. By reducing tension, stress and anxiety in the body, the organism is better able to handle stresses of all kinds: physical, mental and emotional. In the process of centering and aligning the bones in space, the body becomes more resilient in ten short weeks.

Rolfing has changed over the years; it just keeps getting better. Our templates, or ways of looking at the body has changed, making the work more efficient and effective. In addition, Rolfers often employ techniques from the osteopathic tradition that include spinal mechanics, cranial sacral and visceral manipulation, as I do in my work. Through the Rolfing series, the Rolfer gains an intimate knowledge of a client’s structure; from that I can determine the most efficient acupuncture and or movement therapy program for your individual needs.
